Does FSD transfer?
Usually, no.

It is the question every owner asks when they trade in: I paid for FSD once, can it come with me? The honest answer needs a distinction between a licence that lives on the car and a subscription that lives on your account.

The short answer

By default, FSD does not transfer to a new Tesla. Tesla has run limited-time transfer campaigns tied to buying or trading in a vehicle, and each one has its own window and conditions; none is a standing guarantee. A monthly FSD subscription is tied to the vehicle it was bought for and simply stops when you sell or cancel.

  • FSD licences attach to the VIN
  • Transfers only happen in announced windows
  • Subscriptions never transfer between cars
  • Ask Tesla in writing before you trade in

The short answer, and why it is short

There are two different things called FSD on a Tesla, and they behave differently when the car changes hands.

What you have Attached to Transfers to a new car?
FSD purchased outright with the car The VIN No — it stays with the car you sold
FSD monthly subscription Your Tesla account and that vehicle No — cancel on the old car, subscribe on the new
A limited-time transfer offer A specific campaign Sometimes, if you meet every condition
The distinction matters most when you are selling privately or trading in.

So the default is no in both cases. The exception is a Tesla campaign that explicitly allows it, and those have always been time-boxed.

Why FSD does not travel with you

A purchased FSD licence is a permanent feature of the car, like a trim level. It was priced as something that adds value to the vehicle and stays with the vehicle when it is sold, which is exactly why it can support a higher resale price.

A subscription is the opposite arrangement: a monthly right to use software on one vehicle. Tesla has no reason to let it follow you to a second car, because the second car is a second subscription.

How transfer campaigns have worked

Tesla has, from time to time, offered owners the chance to carry a purchased FSD licence onto a new vehicle. The pattern across campaigns has been consistent enough to describe:

  • A narrow window. Ordered and delivered within stated dates, usually announced mid-quarter and closing hard.
  • A qualifying new vehicle. Typically a new car bought or leased from Tesla, not a used one.
  • Trade-in requirements. Some campaigns required trading the old car in to Tesla rather than selling privately.
  • Same account. Both vehicles need to sit on the same Tesla account, and the request has to be made before delivery.
  • One licence, one car. A transferred licence leaves the old vehicle, so you cannot keep FSD on both.

Before you rely on it

If a transfer offer is what makes the deal work for you, get Tesla to confirm in writing that your specific order qualifies, before you commit to the new car. Dealer and sales-advisor assurances are not the terms.

What happens when you sell

If the car had FSD purchased outright, the buyer keeps the feature and you should price accordingly — a Tesla with FSD bought with it is worth more than an identical car without, and listings that hide this leave money on the table.

If you were subscribing, cancel before the sale completes. The subscription ends with the vehicle's association to your account, but cancelling yourself avoids a stray renewal during the handover period.

If you are buying a new Tesla now

  1. Check whether a campaign is live Tesla announces transfer offers on its site and by email; if there is no current offer, there is no transfer.
  2. Confirm your order qualifies Ask in writing which campaign applies to your order and what the trade-in conditions are.
  3. Do it before delivery Transfers are handled during the order, not after you take the car.
  4. Do not assume the old car keeps it A transferred licence leaves the vehicle you traded in.

If no campaign is running, the practical answer is that the new car starts without FSD, and you decide whether to subscribe on it.

The cheaper route on the new car

When a transfer is not available, the least expensive way to get FSD on the new car is not a new purchase — it is a subscription started with a referral code, which credits the first month. That costs nothing to try and gives you a clean comparison against the car you just left.

The referral code guide has the exact sequence, and the hardware guide will tell you whether your new car runs the full stack or the reduced HW3 build — which is worth knowing before you decide FSD is worse than you remembered.

Questions people actually ask

Can I transfer FSD to a new Tesla?

Not by default. Tesla has run limited-time campaigns that allow a purchased FSD licence to move to a new vehicle, but only within the announced window and conditions. Outside a live campaign, the answer is no.

Does FSD add resale value?

A car with FSD purchased outright typically sells for more than an identical car without it, because the licence stays with the VIN. A subscription adds nothing to resale value, since it ends with the owner's account.

What happens to my FSD subscription if I sell my car?

It stops being usable with that vehicle. Cancel it yourself before the sale completes so the next renewal does not land during the handover, and resubscribe on the replacement car if you want the feature there.

Is an FSD transfer offer available right now?

Transfer offers are announced and withdrawn by Tesla, so this page cannot tell you whether one is live. Check Tesla's own site or your order page, and confirm eligibility in writing before you rely on it.
