The rules

The referral program,
explained without the hype.

Tesla rewrote the referral program in October 2026 and moved the reward from car sales to FSD subscriptions. If you are working from an article written before that, the numbers you have are wrong.

The short answer

As of 29 October 2026, Tesla's referral program rewards FSD subscriptions rather than car purchases. A referred driver who subscribes to FSD with a code gets one free month; the referring owner gets one free month per successful referral, or a $99 credit once that subscriber starts paying. Each code can be used 12 times per calendar year, resetting on 1 January.

  • Rewards are paid in FSD months
  • Car purchases no longer earn a referral
  • 12 uses per code per year
  • Reset date: 1 January

What changed in October 2026

The previous program was a car-sales incentive: refer someone who buys a vehicle and the referrer received $250 in Tesla Credit, usable on service, Supercharging or shop items. Buyers received their own benefit under the same terms.

The program that replaced it on 29 October 2026 does something different. It pays in FSD subscription months, and the trigger is a subscription rather than a delivery. Tesla also removed vehicles from the qualifying-purchase list entirely, which means buying a car with a friend's code now earns neither party a reward.

The rewards, side by side

Program Reward to referrer Reward to referred driver Trigger
Before 29 Oct 2026 $250 Tesla Credit Buyer-side benefit under the same terms Vehicle purchase
From 29 Oct 2026 One month of FSD (or $99 credit once paying) One free month of FSD New FSD subscription
Both programs were US-led; other markets run their own versions and terms.

The economics changed shape as well as size. A $250 credit was a one-off windfall; a month of FSD is worth about $99 but stacks up to a year of free subscription at the twelve-referral cap. For an owner with an audience, the new program is arguably worth more.

The twelve-use cap

Each referral code can be used twelve times per calendar year, and the counter resets on 1 January. Use all twelve and the owner has effectively been paid a year of FSD; past that, the code does nothing until the reset.

  • The cap is per code, per calendar year — not per account lifetime.
  • A popular code can be exhausted early, so a newly minted code from a less-shared link is not a bad thing to have.
  • The referred driver's free month is unaffected by the cap until the cap is reached; after that, no credit is generated.
  • Because the cap resets annually, January is when previously exhausted codes become useful again.

Who can refer and who can be referred

Anyone with a Tesla account and an attached vehicle can share a referral link; the app shows it under Refer and Earn. The person being referred needs to be in a position to start a new FSD subscription: a compatible car, an eligible market, and no existing subscription in progress.

The vehicle requirement is the part people miss. HW3 or newer is a hard floor, and a subscription cannot add hardware to an older car. The hardware guide explains how to check a specific vehicle.

What no longer qualifies

  • Buying a new Tesla. No reward to the buyer or the referrer under the current terms.
  • Buying used from Tesla inventory. Same answer.
  • Adding the code after subscribing. Referral credit is tied to the moment of purchase.
  • Referrals from an account that is not in good standing. Tesla can withhold or reverse credits under its terms.

If you were holding a referral code for a car purchase, this change removed its value for that purpose. It still works for an FSD subscription.

Why Tesla changed it

The shift tracks Tesla's business priorities. FSD subscriptions are recurring revenue, and Tesla has been signalling for years that it wants owners on subscriptions rather than one-time purchases — it discontinued the outright purchase in the US in February 2026 for exactly that reason. Reporting on the change also notes that a large majority of recent deliveries came with an FSD subscription attached, and that the program is one of the levers aimed at growing that base.

Whatever you think of the motive, the effect for a driver is straightforward: the referral is now worth roughly $99 instead of $250, but it is far easier to earn, because a subscription is a much smaller commitment than a car.

How to use it

  1. Open the referral link Follow a link or scan a QR code before you start. This page's code opens a referral with the code attached.
  2. Start the FSD subscription Subscribe to FSD (Supervised) on your Tesla account in the same session.
  3. Confirm the credit Check that the confirmation shows the referral and that the first month is credited or the renewal moved out by a month.

The referral code guide has the detailed walkthrough and the list of mistakes that void the credit, and the free trial guide explains how Tesla's own trials differ.

Questions people actually ask

How much is a Tesla referral worth in 2026?

One month of FSD (Supervised) to the referrer, or a $99 Tesla Credit once the referred subscriber starts paying — and one free month to the referred driver. At current pricing that is roughly $99 per side, with a cap of twelve referrals per calendar year.

How many referrals can I make per year?

Twelve per code per calendar year, resetting on 1 January. Reaching the cap is equivalent to earning a full year of FSD.

Do I still get a reward if a friend buys a car with my code?

No. Vehicle purchases were removed from the qualifying list when the program changed on 29 October 2026. Your code now earns a reward when someone subscribes to FSD with it, not when someone buys a car.

Can I combine a referral with an FSD trial?

The intended sequence is trial first, then subscribe with the code when the trial ends. Using the code at the subscription is what generates the credit; a trial on its own does not.
